El Alto is a city with 30 years of life and a million inhabitants, built next to La Paz, at 4,000m high. It is a chaotic place due to the vertiginous growth caused by immigration from the rural areas of Bolivia. With the arrival of Evo Morales to the power, a new Aymara bourgeoisie began to claim their identity. One of their most visible symbols are the houses they build, framed in what they call new Andean architecture, a type of construction devised by Freddy Mamani. The houses are made according to the use of each owner, most of them merchants, and stand out for their colors and shapes. All of them are designed as a business in itself: they have commercial premises, dance halls and apartments. The owners build their villa on the roof, where they live with all the comforts.
